View Full Version : Amp or no amp?
I know the benefits of amping but I picked up a new car last week and I am wondering if it is worth amping the system or if I can get away with no amp.
My current speakers are JL audio 6x9 80w RMS for the rear and I need a new set of 6" for the front (can't be bothered wiring up splits)
It's such a hassel just trying to run 4ga wire into the cabin.
Can anyone recommend some good speakers that don't need to be amped? I believe the JL's will need an amp to avoid distortion :\

Whether you need to amp them totally depends on how you run them, I cant say whether you need to amp them or not. Amping opens up a whole new can of worms, if you want to keep it simple you can, or if you want a real basic amp, Alpine make an in dash 4x50wrms amp that would be perfect.
As for speakers that dont need to be amped look for anything with a sensitivity rating of over 91db.
Sorry I should've mentioned I already have amps, I just don't know if I can be stuffed wiring them up.

If you cannot be stuffed wiring them up, dont, simple really.
If you would like to wire them up there will be a few benefits.
It depends on whether you value car audio as a major factor Rade.
If you're not really into car audio & you can live with the current set up, then leave it as it is.
If however, you really appreciate high quality sound & you are really not satisfied with your current setup, then maybe you need to look more seriously into upgrading your front speakers & amping up the system. If DIY is a bother, then surely taking the car to a few car audio installers for a quote might be the go, as this would be a straight forward job for them & shouldn't leave you too much out of pocket.
Personally, I'd go for front splits, but if that's not your thing like you said, then perhaps a matching JL audio speaker like:
JL Audio model: TR650-CXi 2 way 6.5" Coaxial speaker with a textile (fabric) dome tweeter
4 Ohms, 75 watts power handling & an efficiency of 91dB.
The TR series is their entry level car audio speakers, but being JL audio, they should give a good account for themselves sonically.
You should be able to pick up a pair of these for less than $200 (I've seen them on fleabay for as little as $105 + $20 or so postage)
http://www.jlaudio.com/tr650-cxi-car-audio-tr-coaxial-systems-91033
You could also look at the Infinity reference series as they are very good for the $$.
You can usually get these a tad cheaper than the JLs as well.
Infinity model: REF-6502IX which is a 2 way 6.5 " coaxial speaker & spec'd like the JL Audio but with 93dB sensitivity.

Both of these speakers would run happily enough off a stock head unit as they are efficient enough & are both 4ohms, but they would really benefit being driven from a seperate amp.
I've had good experience with both the JL audio & Infinity Reference brands, having had them in my cars previously and I consider these as a good entry level into decent quality car audio & would favour them over equivalent sony, JVC, pioneer or clarion etc....units that you commonly find in car audio retailers.

JL Audio will sound insane amped up. Highly recommend you do it!
Seems like I should just wire it all up always hate this part. I have JL TR 6*9s in the rear and they are ****ing epic so I know how awesome they're stuff is and was thinking of going that way. Cheers for the advice, looks like I might do a bit of amping.
and I need a new set of 6" for the front (can't be bothered wiring up splits)
I already have amps, I just don't know if I can be stuffed wiring them up.
Why couldn't you be bothered?? Not really that hard of a job...
BTW, what head unit are you running??
JVC

The issue I have if I'm gonna amp I'm gonna do it properly, I don't half ass it. That means mounting the amps, removing seats and carpet, running power cables down the passenger side and ensuring that RCA's run away from any power cables etc etc.
That means 3 amps, and subs.
Can anoyne comment on Fusion sony and JVC speakers? 40% off atm at supercheap
Nice Headunit.... These days JVC units go for under $100, and looking at the one you linked, and looking at the features, (and the price), it would be a shame to not install Amps as well.
3 RCA preouts makes all a little bit easier, (and cleaner), if you do go 3 channels.
Fusion sony and JVC make good amps.... but they can also make crap ones too... You said you already had Amps? You can always just have 2 Amps.... a 4 channel for front and rear, and 2 channel, or Monoblock for the Sub...
And of course it also comes down to your Budget... :)
Picked up that HU for 139 (down from 280 at supercheap! Love those sales!)
I have 3 amps,
1 x Jaycar response 4x100wRMS with 2 dead channels :\ I have the old version, new version: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AA0457
1 x Sony 2/1 ch amp 2x60wRMS - needed it to replace the dead channels - so damn frustrating aswell. http://www.jbhifi.com.au/car-sound-gps-navigation/amplifiers/sony/2-1-channel-amplifier-sku-92777/
1 x Kicker 400wRMS D Monoblock to power these http://www.jbhifi.com.au/car-sound-gps-navigation/sub-woofers/kicker/300-watts-rms-dual-12-inch-in-ported-box-sku-91111/
Ended up getting some cheap 2 way fusions, they sound pretty good and I'm just running my JL's unamped atm, Might Amp them in a few months along with a sub but no rush.
