My mate's having trouble with his '95 magna ts executive (2.6, auto) recently! Problem as stated in the title - engine turns off completely at speed but will usually cut back in after 5-10 seconds of freewheeling. Usually happens on the highway and sometimes when changing between gears when car is at low revs (in which case the engine cuts out and he has to restart the car). Other problems include a lower than normal idle rpm (8-900).

Took it in for a service with the family mechanic, he said the problem was the starter motor brushes and replaced them, unfortunately with no major difference. Fluids are all topped up, oil filter and oil also changed and clean and just about to do the spark plugs.

I know how to fix my kawasaki but that's about it, any suggestions would be much appreciated :happy:

Starter motor only operates for a few seconds when you start the car and will not be responsible for the cutting out while you are driving along.
Have to find out if it is spark related or fuel. Could be fuel pump on the way out or even the ignition coil failing once it gets hot.
I had an old car that used to do that years ago when it got hot. Let the coil cool 20 minutes and it would start right up and off you would go again until it got hot again of course.
Could also even be ignition switch faulty as it has worn contacts. Several other things it might be as well.
Idle at 900 is fine.
Next time it happens see if there is spark when you are cranking the motor over and go from there if there is spark then it may then be fuel delivery problem. Is it a carby model or injected?? Vee

If it is a 2.6L, it's probably the ignition coil or power transistor next to it. Worth a visit to the wreckers if it is.

Could be distributor cap and the main lead (centre of distributor to coil) though.
