Hay guys

Basically the last week i noticed a little clunk everynow and then when taking of from the lights. Last night took off from the lights and accidentally popped my clutch too hard and stalled the car. But at the same time there was a big thud noise. I go to drive the car and it goes no were. All I could hear was a slight grinding noise when realising the clutch. Looked under the car the cv joint was just turning around but not the wheel and looks like the right side cv joint has literally snapped or broken inside the boot. Never heard or seen this happen in a magna? Can heavy duty cv joints be done?

Cheers

Could also be stripped splines in the hub or a broken shaft at the hub.

You would need to pull it down to see what actually failed.

Seeing the guys drag race these cars and break diffs and other things rather than drive shafts, I'd say the standard CV joints are strong enough.
(Provided they are in good condition to start with though.)
I guess you should have investigated the "little clunk" much sooner, rather than waiting for something to fail altogether.

If the splines are stripped does the gearbox need to be removed or opened?

Not if the breakage is at the outer end, I meant the splines on the end of the drive shaft where it connects to the wheel/hub. As you say the driveshaft still turns, the diff in the gearbox should be ok, but it really needs pulling the driveshaft out to have a look at what exactly failed.

You could look at the big nut that hides behind the hubcap on steel wheels, and see if that turns when the car is in gear and the clutch up. That would show (if the nut turns by itself and the wheel doesn't) that the hub splines are stripped. Probably needs a second person to look while you are in the car.

Just had a better look at it. It's actually completely snapped just before the splines on the hub end. Wtf?

Ill put my money on the actual joint has collapsed. No big issue, just get new cvs fitted. I recommended talking to the CV guys and not just a mechanic and find out if they can make a better cv for you. My guy used tougher joint and my have lasted 2.5 years of very very spirited driving and my car is making 280kw atw which is def more than 100 more than yours.

WTF indeed! lol

Needs a new drive shaft, obviously. Easy fix.

Outer CVs are replaceable on a driveshaft, come complete with the splined bit that broke off. Called a Birfield joint, I believe.

Not a Magna one, but you get the idea.

And congratulations on breaking one of those! Let's assume it had a manufacturing defect, rather than your driving style being the cause . . .

Ummm if shaft is broken is broken before the joint thus just replace complete shaft

I'm not shore were the cars been before me. But assume its the torque off the 3.8 lol. Nar but it's literally snapped off just after the splines on the hub. I could put another standard shaft in. But on the safe side won't something stronger.

How much did the stronger shaft set u back?

I got mine dirt cheap. Paid $150 a side for brand new beefed up joints. He used a mix of bits, auto shafts as they are thinker or something he said and used a good quality joint not cheap Taiwanese bits. That was just supply. I just fitted myself.

Auto cv shafts are thicker-stronger? I read somewhere the 3.0l shafts are thick. Will auto shafts fit onto manual?

Alrighty. Went to a cv specialist today. Took my broken drive shaft in. He said its an
Aftermarket shaft he said looked very cheap quality. He said the original shafts by Mitsubishi are alot better quality and he rebuilt a new Mitsubishi shaft with better bearings etc. he reckons this one won't break.

Didn't I mention "manufacturing defect" earlier? lol

Better check the other side . . . they usually get swapped over in pairs. Previous owner cheaped out on them presumably.

The other sides fine but the same brand as the other. He said its fine. Weather to replace it or not?

Well leave the other in there till it breaks also. Least you will know why it broke. If you dont mind me asking what did the shaft cost you..???

Thats alright. Im a real believer of you get what you pay for with CVs. I had Cvs fitted once that where both for $150. First one broke when i was doing a 3 point turn, Second when i gave it a little hit out of a corner. Cheap shit.
