I have a 92 Tr Mitsubishi Magna Manual Sedan. It has a 2cm hole in the upper area of the end cover or timing chain cover and there is water streaming out when i top up water in the radiator. I know i would need to replace the casing but is water suppose to be flowing within the case normally or is their another issue i need to amend. I don't know much about the magna so i would appreciate advice as if i don't have to pull the head off because of a blown head gasket that would be a blessing.
Thanks

Yes, water flows through the timing case. Or at least there is a water passage in it.
Why?
Well, the timing case used to have a water pump attached to it, when the engine was first designed to drive rear wheel drive cars like the Sigma eons ago. Water pump was moved to the back of the head on the front wheel drive engine, and the timing case modified to delete that front water pump.
Case needs to come off and get welded, but there is a reason for it to have a hole in it - corrosion, accident damage or a sloppy timing chain. Needs looking at.

Hi MadMax, Thanks so much on your advice. I wasn't looking forward to having to remove the head incase of a blown gasket lol. yes, you are right as the hole was caused by corrosion as the previous owner just fill the radiator with tap water grrrr. i am not going to make the same mistake. I will purchise a new case which is around $150 complete. Hoping that will be the only problem as it drove like new before this happen. Thanks again all the best David.

Seen that before on a Magna. The owner just patched the outside hole with araldite and tinplate or similar. If there is no water in your oil that might be worth a try, saves having to pull the motor apart. Put some quality coolant in it though.
There will be corrosion in other places too, like the water passeages in the head, so a blown head gasket may not be far off in the future, but you never know. If that happens, it would be a good time to pull the head off and replace the timing cover then.

only difficult thing about the job is remembering where the
bolts go some are long in between and short
so grab a bit of cardboard and slot the bolts in it so you keep track
on the 4 cyl the aircon and sterring pumps have to be taken off
the alternator and engine mount brackets
repco sell a timing gasket kit for the 4 cyl
