View Full Version : Clutch remains partly depressed at times

Our '97 Manual Magna V6 Sedan has 325K on the clock.

The clutch pedal has just started to remain partly depressed sometimes making it difficult to get into gear especially reverse and on an incline. It is also hard to get it to do it on demand so hard to work out exactly what is going on (meaning it happens rarely).

What I have done to date:
1 Replaced RHS engine mount which was broken.
2 Added new oil by draining reservoir and bleeding the system until new oil came through. At no time did reservoir get air into it.
3 Check other 3 engine mounts which all seem good.

Specifically what I am seeing:
1 Clutch pedal remains about 50-75mm off the floor at times.
2 Slave cylinder fully returns to normal position after clutch pedal is depressed and released whether the pedal stays part way down or fully returns to its normal position.
3 When the clutch pedal is manually lifted to its normal position there is no further movement in the slave cylinder.
4 There appears to be no objects fouling any movement of the pedal.
5 During the bleeding process it was observed that after pumping up the clutch and holding and bleed off the valve, the pedal had to be returned to its normal position by hand. Both the slave and master cylinders were then activated sucking oil back into the system from the reservoir. Then pumping up was normal with pedal and cylinders returning to normal.

I have wriggled the return spring on the clutch pedal which seems quite firm.

I am wondering do I have a weak return spring or is it a sticking master cyclinder problem?

Thank you for your help in advance.
Jim

Master, slave or dampener issue, all are in the system

Thanks Madmagna. Should I start by replacing say master cylinder first then moving on down the system until it is eliminated?

I am preparing to remove the clutch master cylinder. I have removed the clevis pin which retains the master cylinder pushrod to the clutch pedal.
Now I find the clutch pedal seems weakly sprung. If I lightly touch the pedal with a finger it goes past a slight resistance and drops down to about the half depressed situation and will not spring back to its normal position.
Could the return spring be on the way out?

Most of the force required to push the pedal back up from being fully depressed comes from the pressure plate in the clutch, the return spring simply pushes the pedal back up a bit further so there is clearance between the clutch release bearing and the clutch itself.

The return spring by itself is pretty weak, and springs don't wear out - only if they physically break.

Only one time I had the problem you have currently was when the clutch plate was totally worn out and replacing the clutch fixed the problem.

Perhaps it is time for a mechanic to look at the problem?
