Would someone be able to let me know where exactly the AT ECU is (on a KL).
I know it's somewhere under the dash. I want to visually inspect it. Do I need to pull the carpet back or remove any plastic panels to access it? Thanks.

It is part of the main ECU
It is behind the stereo. Remove the lower cover below the steering wheel to get better access to it.

Ah thanks guys. I want to inspect where it plugs in, (the edge connector or harness connector), and to make sure that there's been no coolant leaking near there. I assume it's screwed to the dash somehow. Basically I'd like to disconnect the battery, remove the ECU and inspect it, then replace it.

If it is anything like the second gen ECU it can be opened right up so you can inspect the circuit board for burnt components and bulging capacitors. Check the plugs for corrosion if there has been a coolant leak onto the ECU.
Might be worthwhile, even if you find no damage from a coolant leak, to make a bit of a raincoat for the thing out of thick plastic, just in case? Just an idea . . .

As long as it does not droop in the middle as the stock plastic over time sags and any moisture from coolant leak condenses on it and drops over the ECU.

From the TJ onwards the ECU is in a plastic case which can be opened with some care, a collection of small wedges and some patience, but it isn't as easy to open as the earlier metal cases...
Also later models got a piece of plastic sheet glued to the top of the ECU like a sort of poncho to give some some additional protection against heater core leaks (my TJ AWD has this plastic cover). With the plastic cased ECUs, any liquid can only enter the case at the connector end (the rest of the case is a single moulding).

Just goes to show I've never gone digging for my TJ or TL ECU! lol
. . . . just ignore me . . .

Stuck my head under the dash near the brake pedal and can see the ECU clearly. Its mounted centrally below the radio to the floor panel (on the tail shaft or diff/TC hump) and has the plastic wrap over it.
Seems to me to remove it that I would need to peel the carpet back, remove the drivers foot rest, remove the plastic kick panel and then possibly remove a light metal kick panel as well. Same on the other side I'd say.
Has anyone done this on this model who would have some tips? Any guides?
