Hi all im only new to this forum. I used to own a th magna and just last week bought a 2002 ralliart im looking to replace the original red koni suspension all around. I apologize if this question has been asked before but could someone recommend me a whole new setup dont need anything over the top just reliable. Also if anyone knows a good place in brisbane to get them done where I wont be ripped of that would be great

Depends on your budget. how you want the car to handle. or how comfortable you want it to be AND how long you want the shocks to last?

I haven't used Koni reds before - but I'm keen to try them - there are a multitude of options but I'd get a clear picture in my mind about how you wanted the car to be and how much money you want to spend.

I have Kings lows + KYB. In the FWD Magna's I found it a bit stiff. but on the AWD I find this combination acceptable. This is setup is just a stop gap until I can upgrade to something else.

Well, you need to decide whether you want comfort and a soft ride or performance with something a bit.... firmer.
Trying to find a middle ground though, is easier in suspension than finding that magical middle ground between 'performance and economy' in your engine...... ok, I'm rambling........

Thanks mate im looking for a similar performance to what I have now. I will spend more for something better I just dont want to get it all changed and be disappointed I saw a few old threads on here with similar opinions on kyb. Am I able to get the reds rebuilt or would it be better just to purchase new ones? How much did you pay for your set up ? If you dont mind me asking

rebuild the koni reds is probably the better option you already have a good starting point no good going backwards putting others in it. fulcrum suspension if your in brissy can do them.

I recently had a set rebuilt & revalved by Toperformance in Melbourne. Cost around $500 for all 4.

are you removing them yourself or getting someone to do all the work? I'm assuming the above rebuild costs are just to rebuild the shocks, not remove & refit...

Fulcrum just rebuilt my brothers Konis in his MR2..

Great job.. Real easy guys to talk to!

Some guys have Coilovers as well.. But that's starting trouble mentioning anything about them on here.

The other option you have is to speak with TSR in Slacks Creek.. (The Shock Reconditioners) ... They do rebuilds, revalving etc.

Fulcrum also charge the earth, they'd wanna be easy to talk too at the prices they charge.

I paid $3000 for 4 konis, springs and wheel alignment and balance for my old 1996 verada... May she rest in peace.

That was with labour of course, maybe they just saw me coming or maybe you don't care about price and are looking for service but that's just my take on fulwalletcrum

LOL somehow they thought the magna owner had deep pockets, you should be able to get all NEW suspension installed with a wheel alignment for under half that!

Id have a look at Koni Yellows if you were interested in a change.

They have adjustable stiffness ( <-- right word??) setting. The front have a dail from soft - hard...
They rears are a little different in they have to be set either Soft - Medium or Hard before they go in. I ve liked them and had them in the car for about 4 years now. Got a few track days in them and find them tollarable on country roads.

But like someone else said if you wanted to make the right step first id probably look at coilovers also. That way you can adjust what you want.

Cheers

Rob.

I will be getting all the work done the car has 209k on the clock and I can hear a bit of knocking when going over bumps I dont know a lot about suspension a friend said its probably the shocks

Konis are the bees knees. As already pointed out, you'd be silly to replace them with something else instead of having them rebuilt.

Knocking on bumps I'd often the tops.

About $570 for rebuild or $870 for brand new yellows

what!?, replacing just one shock......im shocked :)

if you have 1 dud shock you should replace both sides att he same time, having 2 front shocks with different wear on them will have an impact on stability/handling - always replace both at the same time

Thats what i thought i mean not that i know a lot about this but i thought it was common sence. I even asked the guy "should i replace both fronts" he said no the other one is perfectly fine? He said its common for the FLH shock to go. Again this is at The Shockabsorber Reconditioners Unit 2 73 Moss Street, Slacks Creek, QLD 4127

Is not common for a LHF to go for starters and I am pretty sure being a Koni dealer myself that the reds are NLA as they have not been available for years. Yellows are available but not reds (well from my Koni Distributor anyway)

And yes I would be inclined to do both sides or get both sides rebuilt by a Koni Authorised Distributor

I've been monitoring this thread to get as much Koni knowledge as I can - prepare yourself for questions Mal!

1 - Are the Koni Yellows adjustable like the reds?
2 - The Yellows are supposed to be the "sporty" version compared to the reds - is this correct?
3 - Are the Yellows a direct fit - as in I dont have to cut a part of my old strut off to fit them?
4 - Whats involved with making Koni Reds, or Yellows, fit to a Magna?
5 - How much would a full set of Yellows cost - roughly?

Thanks

Mal recently fitted the koni yellow's to my car. They're absolutly amazing! Perfect balance between comfort and performance (whilst on the soft setting) yes they're firm but a good firm where they're not going to break your back but easily keep your car upright around corners! So yes I would get new ones if you can afford them.

I can answer two of your questions skapper, they sure are adjustable. The fronts from the top of them in the strut tower , but I'm pretty sure the rears have to be taken out to be adjusted.

And cost wise, without looking on the invoice I think mine for a set of 4 were 800ish? Just for the shocks though. Mal correct me if I'm wrong :)

Thanks for the info mate. I'll have to call them tomorrow as they are closed. The guy assured me that they were the same shocks. It's hard as i do not really know what i'm looking at. I hope they haven't lied to me

As said already get them rebuilt.. KYB Excel-Gs/GR2s are the poor mans Koni Reds and KYB AGX are the poor mans Koni Yellows.. i've had them.. their ok but don't compare with Koni's. Heres a good read on shock dyno and these results i will vouch for:
http://www.koni-na.com/civicdyno.pdf

If you want more rigidity, i would upgrade the rear swaybar to the solid whiteline one and don't adjust it to no more than the middle setting.. i've snapped the lower control arm mount twice (once on vrx and once on the ralliart) by having it on too stiff a setting. the car body doesnt feel like a boat when turning and stays flat and you dont have to compromise by having too stiff a sussy setup

plus i recommend these in addition as the rounded edges on the factory D-Link totally butcher the upgraded mounts:
