I recently bought a second hand 2004 mitsubishi magna ES 3.5L 6cyl sedan, and everything is real nice on it apart from one thing. when i bought it off the seller he said the fuel gauge didnt work, but as long as i reset the trip to 0 every time i give her a full tank i should be right, coz it gets about 400k's to every fill. so just before i went to the servo and gave her a full tank and reset the trip meter but when i got home, which was a very short stop start drive it said that i was doing 21.1L/100km, is this just due to the drive being very stop start or is there another problem? when i first bought the car it said it was doing 12.7/100km

Was that AVERAGE fuel use or INST use, cos they're not the same.
And only 400 kays on a full tank? Seems a little low, even if you're...... spirited in your driving style.
Both those readings are indicative only, and to be taken with a small grain of salt.
I'd fill the tank, watch the 'fuel used' until it hits about 68 liters (assuming it's a sedan) see how many kay's you got and that should keep you in reasonably good stead.

Instantaneous fuel consumption is all over the place. Some examples:

Me backing out the driveway with cold engine = 60L/100 km. lol
Short 200m trip to shops, cold engine = 22L/100 Km.
100 KPH, steady speed = 9L/100 km.

Current average over 250 km = 13.5L/100 Km.

i average 440-460kms out of a tank of my ralliart and that is with mostly city driving some highway and a few spirts. after driving spirited today it was showing me 15L/100

you lot cant be serious? - our old ralliart, the TJ and the KJ wagon we used to have used to get us between 600-700km a tank, and thats city and country driving.....in all 3 vehicles

I agree - currently getting about 580 - 600km out of a tank around town with a (ahem) slighty enthuastic driving style. (95-98 RON used only)

by city are you driving 0-60 in 50 meters then hitting another traffic light and continually doing that for 1 hour straight daily? or more :P
