Mate, you're going into LHM.
You need to extract the engine code to find the issue.

Take your car to a dealership and have the codes read. Most likely a speed sensor or ECU issue.

(Good news is, your gearbox is probably not dead.)

Check ecu for coolant on plugs first and don't drive until fixed or you will also be up for a trans as well

HI, I'm a newbie to the forum but I have the same problem as TheHux; my TL has done 213k. I took it in for the 210K service (Profix Mt Barker) and developed the problem a couple of days later; took it back and they later told me it won't select any gears now. Got it home on a trailer and it does select gears but with a thump. I'll follow the advice you gave TheHux but what is an ECU, please? Also read elsewhere the problem could be triggered by non-Mitsi fluid use, true? I got the car with only 13.5K on the clock in Mar '06, we've done nearly 200k with no problems.

The ECU, is the computer that runs your car. A common problem with the Magna's is the heater core, which is located above the ECU can leak, thus causing damage to the sensitive unit. This causes the car to go into Limp Home Mode, which is the clunking into gear. Of course, this is not the ONLY thing that causes LHM, but indeed, the most common.

Hey Guys.. I Hope it's OK for me to Jump onto this existing thread ??.. and Add My Transmission issue which surfaced a day or two ago..

2002 TJ Sedan, Tiptronic.. The Car mostly drives fine. Smooth changes , no rumbles, shudder etc..

The First instance of an issue was once I was parked in Reverse IIRC with engine idling, brakes on waiting for about 6-7 minutes, not realising I had it in gear..

Soon as I realised (being distracted by my bloody phone) I put in park and turned engine off.. about 3-4 minutes later, I re- started engine, put in in Reverse and nothing happened... It's like it was in Neutral, car was rolling back a little due to the slope of the road, but no connection between Engine rev and Wheels.... Put in drive, is sorted connected but it was like I just installed a 4500 RPM stall converted.... then it seem to connect, drove OK to around 40-50 km/h , felt a bit sluggish, rough gear changes, revs kick up for half a second during gear changes.. Once I Got onto Main north Road, accelerated slowly and OK to 80 Kmh, all seemed smoothish.. All seemed OK once I was driving for a about 2-3 mins all was back to "Normal"..

Then, A day or so later, I gave the car a bit of a Caning accelerating prettty well Flat out through first and second into a stream of traffic.. Pulled up and the lights and the trans started playing up again as per above..

Any clues ? Oil Change needed ? Trans rooted ?

Anyone Know of a Good Trans workshop in Adelaide I should go to ?

Any Info or help will be much appreciated..

MR...

To the people with TLs with gearboxes playing up , if in the unfortunate case it does happen to be your transmission, I have a TL/TW 4 speed auto box here with 36,000km on it, I was sent it by mistake as I needed a TJ box.. I just want it gone and will sell it cheap ($300 plus post), to an AMC member. It is on a small pallet and ready to send.

The thing that kills these gearboxes are:

Wave spring entering the oil pump
Planetary gear set failing.
Some other debris entering the oil pump

If the oil pump is clogged or damaged, your trans is F'd. Rebuild or replace time.

If the issue is anything else than complete and total failure, it is probably not the gearbox itself. It is more likely an ECU or speed sensor issue.

TW and late TL.

Well, I hope my TL dated 04/2004 has the revised springy bit. Anyone got a precise date on the "late TL" part?
