Finally found a rear view mirror for my TJ in reasonable condition at the wreckers today, after looking for 2 years!
Put it on the car, but like the one that came off inside coating is peeling off at the edges. Seeing all third gens at the wreckers are missing their rear view mirror, the peeling must be a common problem.
Looking at the old one, there is no obvious way of pulling out the glass intact. Any one tried this with any success? My local glass cutter can duplicate it if I can give him the original intact.
Alternatively, are they available form Mr Mitsu?

can the housing be undone to pop the glass out through the back?

Yep, might be a while ago now, but I bought one from the local stealership four and half years ago for about $45 IIRC.

So how can these be removed without a chuck of the windscreen coming with it?
My mirror shakes really badly during driving and makes it very hard to see out of. I'm thinking of removing and replacing the mirror to see if it fixes the problem.

Try some fishing line to cut through the adhesive?

The one I took off today was starting to shake over the past few months. Turns out the metal holding it onto the screen mount joins onto the body of the mirror at two points, which were visibly loose. If I was to reuse that mirror, I would simply lock the mount down to the mirror body with some superglue to stop movement.
Pull yours off and have a look if that is the problem. Insert a flat bladed screwdriver from below to unlock the mirror, it then slides upwards. Don't just yank it as it will destroy the windscreen.

I was able to remove one just by tapping it upwards from underneath with my hand. Where the tab meets the glass. A hard tap of course but upwards shouldnt cause any damage as if it works itll slide up and thats it. Can't guarantee itll work for all though.

We got one from Mal - and I was prepared for a real hassle, seeing as I'd read about (and seen) the chunks of glass coming off with them! BUT my enterprising wife got the old one off and replacement on - no worries! If this is still an issue I can ask her what she did?
