I can hear the motor working and have seen it working but it doesn't open my boot which I can only open by the manual release handle. Is it likely that a cable has snapped and if so, where can I reconnect it?

so the incar switch isnt opening it but the key will. Im pretty sure there is a small switch on the latch that stops the cable working. Im not 100% sure.

The cables eventually break as well. Easy to replace when/if it happens.

There is a small lever (white plastic, as I recall) that over-rides the internal switch. It is on the face of the lock. It moved down by itself once in my car when the boot lid was slammed down too hard. This could be your problem.
As I understand it, the idea of the lever lock is so that if you take your car for service you can lock your valuables in the boot without anyone else getting to it easily.

yeah as above you will need to use your key to open the boot or climb through the middle seat if you can to open the boot, as said above the white leaver may be in the "lock" position just flick it back to the "free" position

Indeed. I've actually done three of these now, it's always easy. However you cannot buy the part new (You can but it is like over $500 from dealer which is just insanity) you have to find one on a wreck or on the net. It is just a small cable, find your old one (Assuming it's broken of course), follow where it goes and replace it.

I don't have a key hole in my boot....... I can open it none-the-less through a manual release just behind the manhole. So essentially, all I need to do is reconnect the cable up to the remote motor?
Have you actually checked the lock switch on the boot lock as suggested? It is similar to the child lock switch on the rear doors.

I've just pulled it all apart - the wire connecting to the remote motor has frayed and completely torn off altogether
Make sure you lube the locking mechanism and the latching loop so there is less stress on the new cable.
I remember dad's old EA Falcon kept breaking the die cast egg-shaped boot lock lever due to the lack of lubing.

Alright going to go to wreckers tomorrow and just get a cable (hopefully). I have a TW, I'm presuming a TL/KW/KL boot release cable will fit but does anyone know if a TJ/KJ cable will fit if I can't get another TW cable?
