I'm gonna do anoil change this weekend, & was wondering what is the best way to make sure 99.9% of the old oil is goooooone? To get underneath I run it up on ramps, meaning the car is on an angle toward the back. Last time I changed the oil, it would seem all the old stuff didn't drain proper like, cause the new stuff was already dark!

And seeing as I'm putting a dose of Castrol R through this time, don't want it to happen again.

Any ideas? What does the workshop manual recommend?
Thanks in advance

You'll never get the old oil all out unfortunately.

The bung is about 4mm above the oil pan floor. And its quite a bit of a lip. I would say about 100ml is left in the bottom.

Use a flushing oil, basically some cheap brand oil at very low viscosity around 5W/30 or so, drive around for a few days with it in there then drain it out and put your new good oil in.

what I did in my last oil change was once the old oil runs out and when it's just dripping a little, I poured in about 300ml of the new oil while the sump plug is still open *unpluged* and I just watch until the oil that comes out is only of the new oil. and then when it stops dripping, I tighten the sump and put the new oil in. :) hope this helps.

Just a little off topic - What is the best oil to use these days..... I know for certain i wouldn't use any Mobil oil.. I had Mobil 1 in my Gen 1 when i had it which on 2 occasions in 3yrs required a re-ring (blowing smoke) and we had to rebuild our Mitsubishi Express Van motor which used Mobil 1 also. And these cars were serviced regularly and had reasonable Km's on them for their age.

Oh! My 100'th post!

I usally just drain it and replace without flushing.

But the first time I got my car (2nd hand), I just used a cheap oil like 'tek--' suggested but didn't drive around, only idled it for a minute and gave it a couple revs then idles for a bit more and drained, refilling with good oil. :D

Teks idea is best. I wouldn't reccomend putting kero in your engine as you'll never get rid of it all. No need to drive the flushing oil around for a few days, just let it idle for 10 mins and give it a rev here and there.

Nothing wrong with castrol really. I use it and never had a problem.

You can also buy an "Oil flush", which is really just a really fine oil, pour it in to the oil reservoir, idle, 10 15 minutes, then do your change - watch teh oil literally pour out! I imagine that Teks is probably cheaper and has the same effect.

Don't forget to change your oil filter! They're cheap and make a huge difference, no point in running good oil through a dirty filter. Just rub a small amount of oil around the filter gasket before putting it in.

Yeah, I have done this a fewww times before... just my celica, & lancer, never had the drainage problem.

I think the oil flush is what I'll do... I still got 1/2 a bottle of the cheap Shell Hellix crap I used last time.
Thanks all! :bowrofl:

can any one tell me why you would bother with an oil flush ? apart from running crank berings dry , wat else do you acheve that wont be undone in 100k's time ?

I would never worry about it. Im too lazy. I personally don't think its nessecary as long as you change your oil regularly (I do mine every 5000kms).

It just helps prevent your oil dirty oil mixing with your nice new oil.
