Hey All,
Finally got around to bookinf my car in to be fixed, problem is now solved, for those of you who dont know what happened:

Took my car in to do a service at tafe, when i left tafe in the afternoon, car had developed an awful shudder.

Turns out it wasnt my fault as some said (Samurai) the torque converter **** itself from old age, the mechanic who worked on it said he disconnected somethign called the lock up wire, and its running fine!

In the future, a new torque converter may be needed, but i think i will get it converted to manual.

Thanks,
AussieFella

Samurai: I suggested to the guy who looked at it to check the torque converter, because of what you told me, so i guess you helped in the solution!!

TM-SE-RED: Yeah, manual is the way to go, i would like to get one but i dont have much idea what is involved :S

Whats involved? Lots and lots. Heaps of threads on this one. Prob cheaper to get a new 1st gen. U need to get the box, ECU, clutch and assembly, blah, blah, and fitting would also be pricey. But yeah search around, if U know someone who could do it for you it'd be more feasible :).

Nope. His is carby, so he need the box and accessories, cables, pedals, an angle grinder, and a free afternoon.

Incidentally, the ECU doesn't change at all in the first gens.

ECU dosent come near the carbys :D

yeah i dont c y its too hard to convert to manual. u KEEP the same centre console aswell. the auto knob just slides/screws off and the "bubble" shape piece ontop of the existing centre console lifts right off and there u have it. manual centre console!

do you have a TN/TP? try not to get a TM manual box as they are smaller (may be easier to fit) but arent as strong as the TP manual box. if u wanna get one from the wreckers inspect it fairly well. it is a PAIN to rebuild/recon these boxes. u will find u will spend an arm and a leg reconditioning a 1st gen box. if u are lucky and find a box where the synchros are still good (ie no crunching wen changing gears) then u are fine. if not, maybe take it back to the wreckers and try and get a VR4 box or something, i heard they are boltups. but yeah, TP box if u can. TM box last resort.

obviously buy a new clutch. i wouldnt trust a clutch plate/pressure plate to still be good after sitting at the wreckers for how many years/months. it could be a chance to lighten the flywheel too :D performance!
