Take is somewhere like an Autobarn that offers free battery testing, the alternator will be no good if the battery is dead. So have them do a free test and then you will know for sure.
If the battery with the Ignition off is sitting above 12volts but not higher than 13volts that's fine, but with the engine running you should be looking for around about 14.4 volts mark.
If thats not the problem you can check/replace the voltage regulator which could also be the cause but since its a TE if you have the Mitsubishi Alternator then you dont have an external regulator so its best to get a 2nd hand Bosch Alternator out of a TF.

OK do that, I personally would take 5 minutes out of my day and get the battery tested as the alternator can only do so much to a shagged battery, I would not go replacing the alternator straight out of the gate.
However yes one from a TF and onwards will fit no worries, the one in the TE without the external reg im pretty sure came from the 4cyl motor so if you do go ahead and replace the Alternator you might aswell make sure you get one from the TF or TH (I forget when they started using Bosch ones), this however is easier to tell because it does not have "Mitsubishi" Stamped on it, it has the external reg and it physically larger then the Mitsubishi one.

I can appreciate that, but when some people say they "started it" not all mean actually cranking the car over, what I prefer to do is put the info out there, im not able to solve the problem for you while holding your hand but I will offer my limited experience and you can interpret it however you would like. Sometimes with terminology of cars and car tasks a simple word can throw a spanner in the works.
The regulator is on the back of the alternator, a little black thing with 2 screws holding it in, if the alternator isn't making a noise, then I would just replace the regulator. make sure you have the battery dced before you do this. Now the alternator MAY need replacing, but 80% of the time they usually don't

Funny you should mention this. I'm having similar problems only the alternator "works" when it wants too. For instance. Saturday. Got my multimeter out. Tested my batt while running. In the 14s. Turned off. Tested batt was holding charge at 12. All good. Got it professionally tested to make sure. Battery guy claimed my alternator and battery where a ok. All good. Today. While still suffering powerloss problems checked my running charge. Registered in at 11.79 and dropping. I hate it when things "work when they want to" going to replace alternator this week or next. In the mean time my alternator will charge my battery "when it feels like it" :/

The regulator is on the back of the alternator
If its the Mitsubishi alternator that came in TE's then there is no external regulator, the external regulator was introduced in the bosch units which were also physically larger than the original Mitsubishi ones. Trust me.

On getting the battery tested: It did not die on the way home from Cleveland to Ipswich with lights and wipers on for more than half the trip, I think my battery is fine.
That doesn't matter get it tested.
Otherwise just replace the alternator and hope that, that was the problem.

Thanks, alternator works.
That little bit of extra length made it rather difficult to put in, perhaps I should have removed the fan on that side of the radiator...
In any case, it's in, and working.

Did you read what your wrote? I told you why I recommend checking the battery, the major reason because its free, you checked the voltage, big deal a battery with a voltage of 11.8 volts can still be a battery that is no good believe it or not
You may have checked it with a multimeter but the multimeter is not designed to tell you if the battery is dead or not.

Oh, relax. It's quite simple:
Car starts, battery is ok.
Alternator not putting out 14.4V, therefore is not working.
Not rocket science.
Don't know why the OP started this thread, really. Simple problem, simple things to check, simple solution.

Do you know how a battery test works?
How is what I did different?
Put the battery under load for a time, see how it responds.
Usually, this is done with a low value resistor (High load), for a very short period of time.
What I did amounted to a high value resistor, for a fairly long time.
While this is not exactly the same, it is still a valid battery test.
Battery tests are free? You mean they're going to pay me for the time I would have to take off work? I've already lost half a day in replacing this.
I only started this thread because I am new to Magna's, and I know cars can sometimes have hidden issues, especially in the electrical system.
