Where to find the best Christmas lights in Brisbane

Christmas in Queensland is pretty unique. As the Brisbane nights get balmier, they get a little more magical as a merry sparkle spreads across the city. Nothing feels more festive than a totally extravagant display of Christmas lights (when more is definitely the merrier!). Luckily, each year there are plenty of over-the-top twinkling displays to spread the holiday cheer for us all.

It’s time to grab your friends and family, crank up the Michael Buble and head out on a DIY fairy-light-filled odyssey. Whether you want to explore the annual favourites that pepper the centre of town or travel out to some of Brisbane’s suburban displays, here’s where to look for the best Christmas lights Brisbane has to offer.

Christmas lights in Brisbane City

King George Square

An epic 22-metre Christmas tree lights up every night during the festive season - and it kicks off with the official lighting at 6.30pm on Friday 29 November, headlined by Aussie singing sensation Dami Im.

The tree will light up every evening until early January - but be sure to visit King George Square from 6 December as City Hall transforms into a dazzling light and sound show, retelling a local Christmas story. The free show occurs every 15 minutes from 7.30pm to midnight daily from 6 – 24 December.

Roma Street Parklands

A true festive favourite, The Enchanted Garden returns to Roma Street Parkland from 22 November - 21 December 2024. The family-friendly lighting trail combines custom-made lighting, audio, special effects and sculptures like holograms, LED fields and hundreds of 3D-printed birds. There's food trucks and a licensed bar, too. Bookings are necessary.

Queen's Wharf

Christmas will arrive in style at Brisbane City's newest precinct, Queen's Wharf. Celebrating the inaugural festive season, The Star will unveil a ten-night audiovisual spectacular. 'Sono Lumo – Festive Nights of Sound & Light' is where Christmas and cutting-edge technology meet, incorporating some of the city's best DJs and musicians. Head to Queen's Wharf from 4 –15 December to experience the free display, running 5-11pm daily. 

South Bank

Stroll through South Bank this Christmas to get the whole family into the holiday spirit from 14 - 22 December: there's a nightly Christmas parade with tunes, colourful characters and plenty of dancing from The Piazza to Stanley Street Plaza, where South Bank's sparkling tree lights up every night, accompanied by performances from string quartets, dancers and carollers. 

There's so much holiday magic in the precinct: settle in for Christmas movie favourites on screen at the Open Air Cinema in the cultural forecourt, explore your way through Christmas-themed maze, sing along to nightly carols held at Riverside Green, shop for unique gifts at the Little Stantley Street markets, get your photos with Santa and much more. 

Queen Street Mall

The perfect excuse to pair gift shopping and Christmas cheer, holiday fever will take over Queen Street Mall from 6 December. Expect vibrant decorations, roaming entertaintment and pop-up performances every day from 11am to 3pm and Friday evenings from 4:30pm all the way until Christmas Eve. Friday nights feature a big Christmas show on the main stage, too.
