Tucked away just over 500km west of Brisbane, St George might be small but it sure knows how to pack a punch. This slice of Queensland Country is full of big stories, bigger flavours, and a whole lot of heart. If you haven’t been, it’s time to head inland and see what you’re missing.

1. Explore classic country towns along the Great Inland Way

St George is your perfect launchpad into some seriously charming country towns. The Great Inland Way road trip winds through rolling farmland, quiet streets, and friendly faces. Nearby Roma is a must-visit, especially for its famous saleyards, the heart of Queensland’s cattle country and a buzzing scene to soak up real Aussie life.

2. Stop for lunch at Queensland’s oldest pub

Nindigully Pub has been serving up cold drinks and hearty laughs since 1864. It’s famous for a reason, try the legendary Road Train Burger (yep, it’s a monster) and wash it down with a local brew. This place has stories to tell and maybe even a ghost or two to meet.

3. Sip local flavours at Riversands Winery

Wine with a country twist? Riversands Winery is Queensland’s most western vineyard, pouring out wines with big personalities. Grab a glass of their sparkling Rosé or a bold vintage port and settle in for a genuine outback wine experience. Bonus: you’ll hear some cracking local yarns along the way.

4. Stroll and splash along the Balonne River

The Balonne River is the soul of St George. Wander the 2km riverside walkway or jump in a kayak to paddle the calm waters. For something extra, hop on a Sandytown River Cruise with Brett Schweikert, bring a drink, watch the wildlife, and soak up those peaceful river vibes.

5. Drive the Cotton Trail

See where the magic happens on the 94km Cotton Self-Drive Trail. Start at the Visitor Info Centre, cruise past lush cotton fields, and stop for a picnic by the serene Buckinbah Weir. It’s a relaxed loop packed with open skies and wide smiles.

6. Attend an event

St George knows how to throw a party and there’s always something happening. The standout? Easter in the Vines at Riversands Winery. Kids bounce on castles and get their faces painted while you sip, dance, and soak up the shade.

But wait, there’s more. The St George Show, St George Yellowbelly Country Music and Poets Festival, Richmond Campdraft, Thargomindah Polocrosse Carnival, Fishing and Restocking Club Fishing Competition, and Australia Day Long Table all bring the community together with big fun and local flavour.

Where to stay and how to get here

St George’s got you covered, from comfy motels and tourist parks to campsites under starry skies.

Driving here is half the fun. Take the Great Inland Way west from Brisbane it’s about a 6-hour drive with quirky stops like the Melon Hole Bar at Moonie Crossroads.
