Welcome to the

Sunshine Coast

Uncover the charm of the coast

Some places just have “it”– you know that x-factor that has you asking. “Seriously, let’s just book our next trip!” before your last day on holidays. The Sunshine Coast has got it. Maybe it’s the 100-kilometres of waves rolling onto golden shores. Maybe it’s the lush hinterland and hiking trails. Maybe it’s the panoramic views from the volcanic peaks of the Glass House Mountains. Or maybe it’s the way everything here just feels… easy. No need to rush - sun, surf, and serenity are all on the itinerary.

The Sunshine Coast is the only destination in Australia where you'll find three UNESCO Biosphere Reserves sitting side-by-side – which we think makes it pretty special. Here, the good life isn’t a luxury - it’s just how things are done. Before one visit is over, you’ll be planning your next.

Things to see and do on the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast isn’t just about salty hair and surfboards - it’s also hiding one of the world’s rarest natural wonders. The Noosa Everglades (yep, one of only two on the planet!) is your ticket to total tranquillity. Glide through glassy waters, drift beneath tea trees, and soak up a side of the Sunshine Coast that’s been wild and untouched for millennia.

For sun-seekers, the beaches here are second to none. Whether you’re after gentle waves for the family at Mooloolaba Spit, rolling surf at Noosa National Park, or a secret sandy stretch to call your own, the Sunshine Coast has you covered. Bringing your four-legged friend? There are plenty of dog-friendly beaches too, including Buddina, Coolum, and Sunshine Beach.

When the heat kicks in, swap saltwater for fresh. Cool off in rainforest-cloaked waterfalls and swimming holes like Gardners Falls in Maleny, Kondalilla Falls near Montville, or Buderim Falls. For those with a 4WD, Booloumba Falls in Conondale National Park is worth the off-road adventure.

If road-tripping is your style, take on the Great Beach Drive, a 380km sandy highway that connects the Sunshine Coast with K'gari (Fraser Island). Drive along untouched beaches, hike through ancient rainforests, and spot migrating humpback whales from the shore.

From feasting festivals to sweat-it-out challenges, the Sunshine Coast keeps the good times rolling all year long with world-class events. Enjoy local flavours at the Noosa Eat & Drink and The Curated Plate, or push your limits at the Noosa Triathlon, Mooloolaba Triathlon, and Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast. For a dose of music, get your boots on for the Gympie Music Muster or groove at the Big Pineapple Festival. Whatever you're into, the Sunshine Coast has an event to make your visit unforgettable.

What to know before you go

Where is the Sunshine Coast?

The Sunshine Coast is in South East Queensland, just over 100 km (about 1.5 hours’ drive) north of Brisbane. It stretches from Caloundra in the south to Rainbow Beach in the north, with beach towns, national parks and hinterland villages in between.

What airport do I fly into to visit the Sunshine Coast?

You can fly directly into Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY), with domestic flights from major cities and a few international routes. Brisbane Airport is another good option, with shuttle buses and car hire available for the drive north.

How to get around the Sunshine Coast?

Public buses and trains can get you to most major towns, but for full flexibility (especially if you're exploring the hinterland), hiring a car is your best bet. Many towns are also bike-friendly, so two wheels work well for short hops along the beach.

What’s the climate of the Sunshine Coast?

It’s called the Sunshine Coast for a reason. Expect warm, sunny days almost all year.

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): 21–28°C – hot, humid and beach-perfect
  • Autumn (Mar–May): 17–26°C – warm days, cooler nights
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): 10–22°C – mild, dry and a local favourite
  • Spring (Sep–Nov): 16–26°C – fresh mornings and sunny afternoons

When is the best time to visit?

The Sunshine Coast is a year-round gem. Summer and school holidays are peak season, while winter brings perfect hiking weather and fewer crowds. From July to October, the coastline becomes a front-row seat for humpback whale watching. You can even swim with them!

Time your trip for local events like The Curated Plate, Noosa Eat & Drink Festival, or Horizon Festival for an extra treat – or an endurance event like Mooloolaba Triathlon for a challenge. See what's on.
