Townsville sights don’t get much more iconic than the Great Barrier Reef, and there’s no shortage of ways to experience it. Magnetic Island (Yunbenun) is just a 20-minute ferry ride away, offering 23 palm-fringed beaches, rugged national park trails, and that famously chilled-out island vibe. Hire a topless car, hang with the island’s koalas, or snorkel the coral reefs.
The Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) brings marine conservation to life with stunning submerged sculptures. And for a truly world-class dive, the SS Yongala, one of the best wreck dives on the planet, awaits just offshore.
The reef and islands might be the headliners, but the mainland is packed with Townsville attractions you won’t want to skip. Start with the ultimate leg workout - hiking up Castle Hill. The reward? Epic 360-degree views that are even better at sunset. If you’re feeling lazy, don’t worry - there’s a road to the top too!
Need to cool off? Townsville has some top-tier swimming spots. Head to Pallarenda Beach for calm waters and picnic-perfect views, or venture into the rainforest at Paluma Range National Park. If you’re up for an adventure, make a day trip to holy grail of all waterfalls, Wallaman Falls, which is also the highest single-drop waterfall in Australia. Standing at a jaw-dropping 268 metres, it’s the kind of natural wonder that makes you feel gloriously tiny.
Fly direct to Townsville Airport, or if you prefer a scenic journey, hop on the Spirit of Queensland train. Road tripping? The drive from Brisbane takes around 15 hours (or longer if you’re stopping to soak up the sights - and you should!).
Once you’ve arrived, getting around is easy. The city’s walkable, but for island hopping, take the ferry to Magnetic Island or join a day tour to explore the reef. If you’re hitting the road, hire a car and take the scenic route through North Queensland’s stunning landscapes.
Townsville sits in the heart of North Queensland. It's about a 4.5-hour drive (350km) south of Cairns and around 3.5 hours (275km) north of Airlie Beach in The Whitsundays.

Townsville is easy to explore by car, with well-connected roads and parking. Public buses service major hubs including the CBD, suburbs, and the ferry terminal to Magnetic Island.
Expect a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.
Townsville shines year-round, but May to October is the sweet spot – think warm days, blue skies and perfect weather for beach trips and island hops. The wet season (Nov to Apr) brings tropical rain which means lush green landscapes and gushing waterfalls. Want fewer crowds and better deals? Travel just outside peak season.
Time your trip for local events like Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Supercars, Townsville Running Festival and Magnetic Island Race Week. See what's on.
From city to reef to rainforest, there’s plenty to pack in. Explore tropical islands, hit the rainforest trails and dive the Great Barrier Reef. Back in town, enjoy dining, local brews and don't miss a Cowboys NRL game.
Always swim between the flags at patrolled beaches and check signage for stingers or crocodiles, especially in the warmer months.
Right in town, The Strand delivers beachside vibes with a protected swimming area and oceanfront rockpool. Over on Magnetic Island, swim at Horseshoe Bay, snorkel at Nelly Bay, or spot rock wallabies at Geoffrey Bay. Head north for quieter beaches near Rollingstone and Lucinda.

Meet native species at Billabong Sanctuary. Magnetic Island is known for its wild koalas (especially along the Forts Walk) and rock wallabies near Arcadia. You might even spot cassowaries in the rainforest a few hours north of the city, or see platypus in Paluma Range National Park – Hidden Valley is a top spot.
Head to The Strand for waterfront dining, or try the laneway bars and restaurants in City Lane. Ardo offers rooftop cocktails and modern flair, while Magnetic Island dishes up fresh seafood with a view. Check out the best places to eat in Townsville and Magnetic Island.
