Queensland’s ancient rainforests, sprawling countryside, sandy expanses of coastline and magical marine environments are all teeming with an abundance of incredible wildlife – and you certainly don’t need to look far to encounter these lovable locals.

Though, not all animal encounters happen during the day. Once the sun sets and tropical heat subsides, it’s party time for Queensland’s nocturnal wildlife!

From sleepovers with sharks to starry nights sipping bush tea with Tasmanian devils, this guide will step you through Queensland’s best wildlife experiences after dark.

Nocturnal Tour at Wildlife Habitat

After mingling with the animals at Wildlife Habitat in the heart of Port Douglas by day, stick around to experience magic after-dark on a Nocturnal Tour. You’ll hang out with kangaroos and wallabies while local birdlife have a sunset yarn, before the sanctuary’s nocturnal wildlife emerge for their nightly adventures. Rub shoulders with qualified keepers as they feed various species endemic to the Wet Tropics, while interacting with mysterious marsupials like gliders, bettongs and even the elusive Lumholtz’s tree-kangaroo.

Twilight Tours at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast is a wonderland of wildlife and all-ages adventure – and its evening Twilight Tours give you front-row seats to the ultimate animal encounter! You’ll get up close with night dwellers like cheeky Tasmanian devils, and go on a spotlight walk to search the gumtrees for cute koalas and lock eyes with mighty crocodiles. The tour includes a remarkable light display that transports you back to the Dreamtime, immersing you in the spirit of the Yugambeh people. Mon Repos is a secluded coastal cove in the Bundaberg region – and from November to March, the 6km stretch of beach is closed to the public for turtle season. But you can still experience the remarkable natural wonder of turtle nesting (November to January) and hatching (January to March) by booking into the Mon Repos Turtle Encounter, hosted nightly by expert park rangers. Depending on when you visit you could witness the miracle of mother turtles laying eggs, or baby turtles waddling across the sand in their first days of life. It’s a true bucket-list experience!

Come for the turtles, then stay a while to explore the best bits of Bundaberg, from breweries and art galleries to paddock-to-plate food experiences.

Zoofari Night Tours at Darling Downs Zoo

Fancy an outdoor dinner and a show? The Darling Downs Zoo in Pilton (halfway between Toowoomba and Warwick) kicks off its Saturday Zoofari Night Tours with a delicious sunset BBQ, before taking guests on a guided spotlight adventure, where you can expect to encounter lurking lions, howling wolves and all of the curious creatures that emerge for feasting and fun at night.

Tour bookings also include entry to the zoo the following day, so make it an extended weekend in Southern Queensland Country and be charmed by Toowoomba or explore the endearing town of Warwick.

Sleep under the Sharks at Sea Life Sunshine Coast

Pack a bag and get set for a night of marvelling at underwater wonders with this must-do sleepover adventure at Mooloolaba’s Sea Life aquarium. An 80-metre underwater tunnel will be your bedroom for the night, as sharks and giant rays soar majestically above. You’ll get a fully guided behind-the-scenes night tour of the aquarium, giving a fascinating insight into what your favourite marine life gets up to after dark! Night wildlife canoeing tour at On The Wallaby

Just one hour south-west of Cairns in the Atherton Tablelands lies the historic village of Yungaburra, home to recreational haven On The Wallaby lodge. Perched on Lake Tinaroo, residents here include platypus, tree kangaroos and river possums, along with an abundance of bird life – the best time to see them is at night, and the best way to do it is from a canoe! The two-hour Night Wildlife Canoeing Tour is a moonlit paddle through the rainforest-fringed lake, where you’ll spend the night spotting the active local wildlife from the water. What a thrill!
