The Whitsundays aren’t just postcard-perfect beaches and coral reefs – they’re 74 islands of pure adventure (and chill time, if that’s more your vibe). Think Heart Reef seen from above, island-hopping between Hamilton and Hook, and salty days that feel like they were made for you. The best bit? You don’t need weeks up your sleeve. With this six-day itinerary, you’ll hit all the highlights.

Day One: Arrive in Airlie Beach and set sail

Whitsunday Escape, Mantaray Bay, The Whitsundays

Welcome to Airlie Beach – the palm-fringed playground that’s equal parts laidback coastal town and party hub (depending on how you want to spend your time). Just a short hop from Whitsunday Coast Airport, this is your launchpad to island adventures, reef escapes and a few epic sunsets. Settle in, because the next six days start here.

  • Jump in a kayak: Paddle through fringing reefs and nearby islands on this half-day tour that will give you a taste of the region’s breathtaking beauty.
  • Stroll the foreshore: Get a lay of the land with a meander along the beach. Then recharge with a smooth coffee at Treehouse or enjoy a cocktail with a view at Northerlies Beach Bar and Grill if you want to really dial up the holiday vibes.
  • Sail the Whitsundays: Choose a sunset cruise, half-day, full-day trip for bucket list-worthy experience. Lady Enid and Wings Sailings Charters are local favourites.
  • Kick back at the pub: Listen to live music, sip cocktails and craft beers, and tuck into fresh-from-the-trawler seafood at The Airlie Beach Hotel’s pub.

Where to stay: You can’t go wrong with anything from this list of Airlie Beach accommodation, but our pick is the Coral Sea Resort.

Day Two: See the sights that make this place famous

Ocean Rafting, Whitehaven Beach, The Whitsundays

Spend today exploring the place that put the Whitsundays on the travel map: it certainly lives up to its reputation. There’s a few ways you can see world-famous Whitehaven Beach, but our favourite? Making it part of an epic day exploring the islands on one of these tours.

  • Ocean Rafting offers an exhilarating ride to Whitehaven Beach, hiking in Whitsunday Island National Park and snorkelling on the reef in an action-packed day out.
  • Or jump on board with Red Cat Adventures to experience the beauty of the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef in one day.
  • Let a Ngaro Indigenous guide show you around secluded islands and sacred sites with Whitsunday Paradise Explorer, while learning culture and hunting techniques of the Whitsunday’s oldest custodians.

Where to stay: Check into Hamilton Island’s newest luxury hotel, The Sundays. Grab dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Catseye Pool Club, helmed by award-winning chef Josh Niland. Local tip: order the neapolitan sundae for dessert.

Day Three: Take a scenic drive with big rewards

The Big Mango, Bowen, The Whitsundays

While the islands are breathtaking, it’s time to head back to the mainland to discover the beauty that lies up north along one of Queensland’s most scenic coastal drives.

  • Discover seaside villages: Roll into the townships of Cape Gloucester, Dingo Beach and Hydeaway Bay – you won’t find crowds here, just Coral Sea views and sandy beaches perfect for a kayak or SUP.
  • Make tracks to Bowen: Stop by the Big Mango for an iconic local photo, then continue on to Horseshoe Bay – one of the region’s best swimming spots. The snorkelling here is great too, with fringing reefs just offshore that are ripe for exploring.
  • Stop for dinner: On the drive back to Airlie Beach at Birds Fish Bar in Bowen Fisherman's Seafood Co. Right on the marina, this catch is trawler-to-table goodness, with BYO beer and wine.

Where to stay: For something a little different, snooze in a boat bungalow at Freedom Shores Resort.

Day Four: Discover waterfalls hidden in the rainforest

Cedar Creek Falls, Conway National Park, The Whitsundays

You might think the Whitsundays is a palette of blues and whites, but today you’ll discover its lush green on a day trip to Cedar Creek Falls, about 40 minutes’ drive outside Airlie.

Nestled into a natural rock amphitheatre in Conway National Park, this is one of the most refreshing swimming holes you’ll dip into – floating in the clear, cool water surrounded by palm trees, cedar and flora. You can explore more of the national park along the hiking trails.

Day 5: Embark on an unforgettable reef experience

Reefsuites, The Whitsundays

You’re checking out of your Airlie Beach base and into the Great Barrier Reef adventure of a lifetime. Local tip: Rise early and grab a smoothie bowl and coffee to go from BOHO Café to start the day right.

  • Cruise Whitsundays: Set sail with to Hardy Reef and spend the day on the Reefworld pontoon, where you can dive, snorkel and go on glass bottom boat tours. At night, crawl into your swag on the deck and be one of the few to watch the sun set over the reef.
  • ReefSuites: If you want to up the ante and get a window seat to the reef from your own plush bed, book the night below deck at Australia’s first underwater hotel. You’ll be counting fish to sleep, not sheep.

Day 6: Soak in the serenity

Wake up as the sun’s first rays hit the water. It’s a soulful experience to breathe in the quiet and have breakfast as the reef and its colourful inhabitants stir to life for another day. Then, board the boat back to Airlie Beach and take in your last views of the Whitsundays Islands as you cruise.

Back on the mainland:

When to Visit, How to Get There, What to Know

Horseshoe Bay, Bowen, The Whitsundays

Best time to visit: The Whitsundays shine year-round, but the sweet spot is the dry season (May to October) with warm days, low humidity, and calm seas — perfect for sailing, snorkelling and beach-hopping. Shoulder seasons (March to May and September to November) bring fewer crowds, great holiday deals, and still plenty of sunshine.

Getting there: Fly direct into Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine) from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, then it’s a quick 30-minute drive or shuttle to Airlie Beach — the mainland gateway to the islands. You can also land on Hamilton Island Airport, with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns, putting you right in the middle of the Whitsundays action.

What to know:

  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and reusable water bottle — you’ll spend plenty of time outdoors.
  • Book ferries or transfers in advance, especially in peak seasons.
  • Airlie Beach makes a great base for day trips, while Hamilton Island and other resorts are perfect if you want to wake up in island paradise.
