Cairns might just be nature’s show-off - and we love it for that. Where else can you hop between two World Heritage icons, chase waterfalls, and feast on prawns from a boat all in one day? Whether it’s your first time here or you’re back for another round of tropical magic, this list of top things to do in Cairns will have you living like a local, with better tan lines.

Strap in and soar over the reef, rainforest and waterfalls on a 45-minute helicopter tour with Nautilus Aviation. You’ll catch views so good they feel fake (they’re not). Got time up your sleeve? Add a picnic on a sand cay like it’s no big deal.

If the Great Barrier Reef had a CV, it’d say “largest in the world, UNESCO-listed, and drop-dead gorgeous.” Kick things off with a Reef Teach session so you know your clownfish from your coral, then dive in.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
This rainforest village isn’t just charming - it’s an excuse to travel very stylishly. Ride up on the Kuranda Scenic Railway (it’s all tunnels and waterfalls) and float back down on the Skyrail, gliding over ancient canopy like a rainforest VIP.

Seafood so fresh it still thinks it’s swimming? You’ll find it in Cairns. Hit up Prawn Star for trawler-side snacks or Salt House for a fancier affair. And if you’re more turf than surf, don’t worry - this place is a rising star on the foodie scene

Hot Air Balloon Cairns
Swap the reef for nature’s own rollercoaster hills and float into the sunrise in a hot air balloon. You’ll spot waterfalls, farmland, and probably a few wallabies waving up at you. Fancy sticking around? Spend the day eating your way through quaint villages and fresh produce trails.

Cairns is hot. Literally. Beat the heat with a dip in the Cairns Lagoon or escape to Palm Cove for a full-body exhale with an ocean soundtrack. Just remember, if you’re in nature, swim where it’s safe and stinger suits are your friend.

Waterfall chasing is practically a sport here. Start with Crystal Cascades (a local favourite), or head south to Josephine Falls for natural rock slides and rainforest zen. Just don’t forget your camera or your swimmers.

At Rainforestation in Kuranda, the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience gives you a deep dive into ancient customs, complete with didgeridoo demos and a chance to throw a boomerang (no promises it’ll come back). Culture is woven into the Cairns experience - from bush tucker in the Daintree to ancient rock art hidden in the hills.
From waterfront twilight stalls to tropical produce and local art, Cairns’ markets are buzzing with colour, flavour, and a whole lot of charm. Come for the fresh mango smoothies, stay for the quirky finds and laidback vibes.

Cairns knows how to turn it on after dark. Think rooftop views, tiki vibes, and tropical cocktails galore. Start at Hemingway’s Brewery for local craft beer, then dial it up at Three Wolves for a whisky or two.
