This eDNA sample was collected as part of the Wai Tuwhera o te Taiao (WTOTT) Open Waters Aotearoa programme run by New Zealand's Environmental Protection Authority. The programme is a nationwide initiative which offers community groups, iwi/hapū/whānau, and schools the opportunity to collect eDNA samples from their local waterways as a way to explore the biodiversity of ecosystems through a new lens, strengthening the connections between people and nature.

The project aims to support and empower environmental protection at the flaxroots of Aotearoa New Zealand. By offering access to a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use tool that provides evidence of the life within their waterways, participants are empowered to take action and work with others to connect with their local environment. When we learn more about our local ecosystems, we can make better decisions.
