'98 TF Wagon, Pedders suspension, Advantix 18" wheels. I believe it was the first "sported up" Magna in Cairns. Now they're EVERYWHERE!

Bought as an ex James Cook University fleet car with just under 50,000km. Now it's up to 118,000 without a hiccup (if you don't count the battery that I just bought due to my own non maintenance of the last one, grr!) :(

And it MIGHT get over the pits when I have to get it registered in NSW in October...

Hi Ironman,

Did you mod ur car as soon as u got it? If so, how has your car held up and hows the driving experience with the large wheels etc?

hey buddy, i've got the exact same model as you. i got mine at 77,000kms on the clock. now it's a little over 100,000kms after 2 years. i am planning to get a new Accord euro (in BLACK  ) or a used 3-series bmw but the only thing holding me back is i'm going to be in australia for at most another 2 years  but yea, i think your car would last another 122,000kms without problems. with all the regular service and stuff that is... :D

10-01-2004, 05:21 PM
Yeah well thats what im after...I change the oil and filter every 5000kms and keep the car in good nick..I really wanted a BMW 320i and all that but the prices to keep it running scared the hell outta me.....The magna is pretty cheap to run and insure. I want to keep the magna for a while now so i just want to see how other magna owners here are doing in terms of kms......

my TF has 151k no rework
my TM 85 GLX had 306k no rework, but needs head gasek replacement.

If a 1st Gen can do 306k with only gasek change, i think a Gen III should be able to do at least that. also heavily dependent on how you drive and your mods....

I've since moved to Syd-En-Ay and I don't take the Beast out too much. Paramatta Road (and all the other bloody roads...) is just too pot holed and I'm sure all the crashing and bashing won't be doing my body, suspension, 18" alloys or 45 series tyres any good at all!

To ease the strain I have considered going back to standard rims with stickier tyres, but haven't done anything yet.

My te has 202,000ks on it, and it's a four banger, so it's doing great, only problem I have had was a gearbox that I fried, no fault of the gearbox, just me doing 6grand starts from neutral, hehehehe.

Funny thing is I drive this thing pretty hard and redline it everyday and it has never missed a beat, nor has it leaked any oil or anything, amazing, and it was one of the first te's off the line, being an april 96 model.

It has taken me to Mossman north of Cairns and to Sydney as well.
They are a great car to drive too.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase and will be buying another in the near future. :D

132,500 Km when I got it at the end of November last year. It's now sitting on 139,000 so 7,000 Km or about 600 Km per week. This is starting to go down though.. I expect I'll only be doing about 1 - 200 Km a week now seeing as though work is only about 2 Km away. I also broke up with my girlfriend so that cuts back the Km's massively :)

The only thing I'm worried about is the gearbox.. and I aim to get rid of it before that carks it.. hopefully get around 225 - 250,000 out of it.

Average of 425k's to a $24 tank of LPG, i was most impressed at the time! Little has changed i just wanted something faster an a real car, you know one with three pedals!
My current TJ 00 Sports is ofcourse a 5spd, i bought it in October with 42,100km on the clock and it just clicked over to 68,000km the other day! I dont know how i manage to drive so far!

Recently traded my '99 KH Verada with 145,000kms on the clock. Bought with 117,000kms on it, gave me no trouble whatsoever. Had injectors and throttle body cleaned and a full bank of platinum plugs put in (because i could) at around 125,000kms and ran really well. Interior trim was still nice and tight with only the minor occasional rattle. Also had to replace the electrical antenna post (nylon cord snapped) which was only a $90 part....no big deal. Was up for rego and if i waited another year the trade in value would have gone through the floor (with km's over 160 000 they cannot offer statutory 3 months warranty), otherwise i would have kept it.

Replaced my KH 2 months ago with an '03 KJ GTVi with only 14,000kms on it.

Hey guys...

Just bought for 99' TF Solara with 240,000 kms clocked. $9000 driveaway. I'm no expert but the engine's still smooth and silent. No rattling. Seemed well taken care of too. Hardly any scratches on the body and interior.

Some say age is more important than mileage (provided regular servicing is done), example: a 99' with 240,000 kms is better than 94' with 150,000 kms. :doubt: Thoughts on this?

Any maintenence tips for a high mileage car like mine? Last service record was was mid last year. From what i've seen throughout this thread, seems like any car with > 300,000 kms mileage should be avoided like a plague?

Yeah its a newer car, less wear and tear on the body and interior.

At about 300K, the magna engine has really had it, serious things are going to go wrong with it, end of the day the cam shafts in the magna wont last as long as the pushrods in a falcon or commodore.

My TF turned over 260000 km just yesterday. The engine is as strong as ever and the only issues i have had are the clutch (replaced at 250000) and the starter motor. The next things on the agenda are struts and rear shocks, exhaust and a bit of paintwork. I cant really fault the car and it has had a pretty hard life with me driving it! Although a mates dad owns a VR Commodore with just under 940 000. With one engine rebuild and 5 auto trannys replaced. And everytime i see it i cannot believe my eyes what a good nick this car is still in. But just gotta add that this bloke spends half his saturday servicing the living daylights out of it,,, so that might kindas explain it.

How the hell can a car need to be service every weekend...... even on a car with that many K's that's abit over the top. Unless he's doing 5000k's a week - there should be no need to 'service' it every weekend - just a waste of money.

Well i also should mention this guy is an ex-mechanic and he is a bit over the top, looks after his cars failry well. By saying every saturday i didnt mean as in changing the oil etc. every time. He just looks at and services different things every weekend. And hes bloody good at it too. Several years ago i was there when he lieterally stripped the whole thing! Its had a hard life. Used to belong to my dad who drove it everywhere, now it belongs to me who does alot less K's but thrashes her a fair bit (red line gear changes etc)

Its even suffered a rear end colison with a semi trailer. Whole back end was replaced yet its still fine. Only problem ive ever had with it was a minior oil leak that got fixed for like $50. If it sees over 300k ill be happy. I plan to drive it till it dies, 400k would be nice :D

Quite easily, if it was used as a company car and driven along between say Hobart and Launceston and back every day that would be at least 2000km a week for say 40 weeks in a year for 5 years and you get 400,000km (even driving to uni and back i average about 35,000km a year  )

My 2.6lt astron powered 4 in my TR turned over 208000 just before I traded her in !
It was all original still running sweet and I never had to spend money on the motor ! (altho i had to replace an auto at 130,000) I even had the original timming chain that only rattled momentarily when you first started it ! Needed some valve stem oil seals tho as the puff of smoke on start up was a bugger !
All tho i hammered it I always serviced oil & filter every 5,000ks and never reved the engine past the manufacturers recomended rev limit !
When I traded the TR on the TF in 2001 it was on 48,000ks and now sits on 178,000ks and I hope to run it twice as far before the update !

I always warm up the engine by letting it idle for a minute or so every time the engine has been off for an extended period (>10 hrs) before driving off. :)

Only recently bought the car but its still running strong.
Reliability wise the magna appears to be doing better then my other mitsubishi's.

2nd car was a AB GSR Cordia, seemed to always have little issues.
My other car at the moment is a heavily modified Galant VR4 and its got its fair share of teething problems.

Hey, do you know whether the timing belt has ever been changed? If it's the original, that's pretty good to get that amount of mileage on the original belt considering they recommend it be changed every 100K.

27 sets of tyres thats gettn ruffly 29000 k's to a set of tyres... thats pretty bloody ordinary considering you would think that the 800 thou k would have been driven sensibly too get that sort of mileage without rebuilds. With regular servicing comes tyre rotation. I dunno about every else but even with performance tyres I would of thought 35 - 40 thou from a set??... I just clicked over 175000 n put the 5th set on a month ago

The car gets serviced every month religiously, and of course the tyres would be getting rotated, I would think he is changing the tyres well before they are shagged. If you spent the hours in the car that he does you probably wouldnt want to be running the tyres on their last 20% either.

Nope, I'm only expecting 25k out of the OEM Grid II's. 35-40k is about right for a standard all-rounder tyre.

it actually runs reeeeeeeally well, smooth ride and no problems whatsoever except occasionally blows some smoke out of the exhaust. let's just hope it stays that way for a while!
was an ex company car of my dad's work, purchased it at 290000km for $1500, but it then needed about that again in service/repairs. needs 300000km service soon, which hopefully will be nothing major, just timing belt.

03 KL AWD Rada, about 800 km shy of 70,oookm atm.
brought it in august last year with 52,ooo km on the clock.
iv had it back and forth along Mackay - Gold Coast 3 times now, hasnt missed a beat.

only thing i done - is service it for its 60'tho km service... at 68'tho km! lol
its getting due for another service now...

i gotta take it back up north next month for a couple of weeks as well, so il be well over the 70'thou mark then.

EDIT - the only probs i have had with the car, is the friggin fuel guage and the fuel tank sender... iv learnt to live with it now tho and drive by L used when the needle drops to E when i only used 48L......
