I went to visit her at the workshop this morning and the engine is all in, new drive shafts, power steering hose, engine mounts, timing belts, and the wiring is now 50% complete. A hole was drilled into the firewall to fit the ecu.
The readings on the old dash cluster were inacurrate so a new cluster was sourced from yahoo auctions. the new cluster is from a 24V sigma in japan although it's display is in miles not kilometers. I'm guessing that this cluster was originally from a European sigma and the owner of the Japaneses sigma had sourced this from the uk as a replacement over the standard japanese 180km/h cluster.
It'll take some getting used to but it does show the kilometer readings in the inner circle so that'll help out a lot.
If all goes to plan it should be up and running by late next week.
Big thanks to chuck, aj (gotrice), paula ([tufftr]), lucy (lucifer) and paul (VR-04-TT/killbilly) for helping out with all the useful info and advice and always answering my questions.
And DAN! (trotty) You're a legend mate thank you so much for doing the high flow extractors and travelling from penrith to the workshop in strathfield just to do the measuring and fitting of the pipes. Also appreciate how you always keep me updated with the progress of the extractors too! Thanks guys you rock! If anyone needs pipework done... dan is the MAN!
Finally got my hands on a digital camera so here are some shots so far...

Lookin good. It's all up to me now eh?
Will have some time Mon/Tue to try and finnish.
Do you know if the boys will let me use a hoist in the workshop?
If not im gunna have to bring some big stands to get under the car..... Doh
Oh and can you forget about the air con? do you really need it? will make my pipes so much easier to make!
dimi108
10-11-2007, 08:36 AM
na don't need the air con for now i'll get you to do in late december if you're free
they told me this morning that they'll hoist it up once the wiring is finished which should be by monday afternoon/tuesday morning so once the car get's started they'll get it up
yeah they'll let you use it they seemed happy that you were doing the extractor work
give them a ring first just to make sure but i'm sure they won't have a problem with that hehe :)

And trotty, do you still have the flanges? Might need a set for mine.
P.S Dimi you might get some ideas for your engine when i post my thread up:D

dimi108 & TUFFTR,

Even though I've moved on from the 2nd gen now, this engine mod is still (and I guess always will be) one mod I wish I'd done to the wagon.

Dimi im not 100% sure.
Im going to take mine into a wrecker next week and match them up some some 3L DOHC engine covers there. If the price is right though ill just get them from the wrecker. i couldnt see these things being too expensive.
And nah, not in yet, your almost is, and i am very envious! (Better be putting that Eaton m90 onto it at some stage :D)

Hey bud... Well i got the pipes done. Nothin flash but will get you on the road.
Cant believe that i couldn't use the hoist... It made my life SOOOOOOOOOOO HARD!
Forgot pics. Diddn't pic the gasket up, but it should be ok. I put the rear gasket in that i had. Had a few dramas with the original manifold hitting on the rear engine mount but was easily fixed. Had to sort out what manifold worked best on what side as one fitted both sides and the other only fitted the front bank. Now i'm not 100% that the rear pipe wont hit on the cross member when givin it curry. Wont damage anything, its got clearance but i dont know how far the motor torques back. So you might get a knock/bang when launchin hard, but i doubt it. Just don't freek out. The Oxygen sensor is all in and plugged up.
Dont know what to tell you about the wiring harness. Diddn't look like much had been done.
just all hanging out the side of the engine bay. some things were hooked up, but majority out the sides. Looks like alot of excessive wiring to me, needs to be shortened.
Well give me a buzz when ur ready.... Cheers! DAN
dimi108
14-11-2007, 03:52 PM
haha no worries man thanks for all the hassle aye :) :) :)
as long as i get it on the road and it hasn't robbed me of any power then it's all good
can i take the gasket to midas and get them to slip it in for me?
do i really need the gasket in? what'll happen seeing that it's not in?
yeah getting the wiring from the half cut delivered tomorrow
so hopefully it'll be all wired up by friday or saturday

i wouldn't mind at all paying him the $1640 if he had done the job last week and finished it but no way i'm paying that much if he's just gonna be chilling and not fixing the car up for me when he said he'd do it a week ago
his plan backfired because he was trying to get me to get a haltech ecu so it's easier for him to install he reckons then i said no i've already got an ecu i just want it wired up and he did this big sigh over the phone and sounded heart broken and said okay then...
THEN 48 hours later he calls me to tell me it would be close to the $2000 mark for the wiring (i'm guessing he thought i would've just said OH i'm gonna get the haltech then) but i said okay dats fantastic just fix it for me then he did another sigh on the phone wtf
guess that's why he just couldn't be eff'd doing it for me and let the car sit there and chill with the c0ckroaches
it's a shame because he is a reputable auto electrician too
bit disappointing but ah well :boohoo:

They don't really want the work. Either their lazy or have plenty of other work, so they quote a stupid price and reckon if the customer will pay the price then fine, if they go elsewhere then that's fine too.
So hard to find people that want to charge what a job is worth and offer good service as well.

i'll need to source a manual box for conversion as the v6 automatic doesn't pair with the twin cam engine
so the only way to salvage this is by doing a manual conversion and using an aftermarket computer
first things first, anybody know which aftermarket computer i'll need in this thing? forgive my n00bness
oh and the price range on a manual conversion?
OMFG
MAN TOLD YOU NOT TO USE THE STANDARD ECU!!!!
I reckon thats bull**** man.
The engine itself is the same length, only the heads are bigger.
If the 3L SOHC block uses both an auto and manual. why will one bolt up and the other not?
Madmagna
26-11-2007, 03:23 PM
What a load of rubbish Dimi, there is no way to do this when you clearly do not know what you are doing.
KB had the standard factory ECU for the DOHC with a manual.
The TCU is independant to the ECU in so far as it is a seperate unit, the ECU will send and receive signals to the TCU thus the trans runs, things like the Revs, Speed etc.
If they can not figure out the basics to get the trans to run then they need to learn some basics about reading wiring diagrams.
dimi108
26-11-2007, 03:23 PM
he told me because the SOHC is running a distributer and the twin cam engine doesn't have a distributer it won't work out
he said the automatic transmission in the car will not work with the twin cam here
i'm super confused but i do believe him as they have spent the whole day trying to sort everything out for me
they are a reputable workshop too so they don't try and pull dodgies
i told him if i source a manual gearbox will this work out and he said yes but with the auto it will physically not work

Ask them how do they come out standard overseas with it?
And you have the ECU from the 3L DOHC anyway so whats the trouble with hooking it up...

26-11-2007, 03:45 PM
thanks mal
i don't see what he was trying to say
so my v6 automatic gearbox would work with the DOHC right?
i've got the stock GTO 94 ECU
plus the gto harness inclusing fuse box
he emphasized on the v6 gearbox not matching the harness from the GTO so the sensors for the tranny won't be able to read the load of the engine in order to change up or down
he sounded serious about it and we spoke on the phone for 25 minutes he was just explaining it all
but yeah basically my v6 automatic gearbox doesn't match the GTO wiring harness at all
thus he came to the conclusion that the twin cam engine will not work with the automatic gearbox... hmmm
looking for a solution
do i really have to source a manual gearbox or is there hope for the v6 automatic? :doubt:
[TUFFTR]

dimi108
26-11-2007, 03:54 PM
that's what i was thinking
for months i researched and annoyed chuck, aj and kb about what i need and what will work
and now this bloke says it wont
so it's kinda confusing!
i mean, the engine is done it's sitting in there
the headers are done
everything is fit snug
it's just the wiring that needs to be complete and i have the gto harness as well
so what's happened is he reckons the GTO harness will not hook up to the gearbox... now not knowing much about the electrics, doesn't he just have to wire it all up? make his own wires if he needs to? sheesh

If the box bolts up to the block, then wiring is much easier than trying to adapt a ****ing gearbox to a motor. What a load of ****, he can adapt your SOHC harness to the auto gearbox, wtf.

no this is going to be towed to autosalon can't let the team down by being absent
i'll tow it on staging night!
just trying to brainstorm some ideas! just a minor hicup it should be all good
i believe they may have just gave up because the job is quite fiddly
especially their workshop being packed out and busy, spending time on my car won't do good for their budget and will make their customers angry because of the extra wait that will be forced onto their cars because of mine
reckon it's worth taking it to a different auto electrician?
like mentioned before, the said that the harness i took out of the GTO isn't compatible with my automatic gearbox....
is that believable?
Trotty
26-11-2007, 05:10 PM
It may have different connectors but i dont see the switches doing anything different to any other box...
But cant they use the original tcu and wiring and adapt that to the GTO harness?
dimi108
26-11-2007, 05:21 PM
HMM
that's something i'll ask them tomorrow!
the most thing he was concerned about was not the gearbox not being compatible...
he said it will run on limp mode because the sensors are different on the GTO automatic transmission
btw, much appreciate the replies and help guys!
Trotty
26-11-2007, 05:45 PM
what about an interceptor that takes info from the motor and converts it so the box can understand?
Caution,... I may have just invented this contraption. I'm sure its just some resistors or somthing..??? any ideas any1?
Does the box not only take a couple of things fron the motor, ie throttle position and vacuum?
3 Questions to anybody that knows...
1; what does the transmission need to run? I.e Sensor voltages, how many sensors? Simple On/Off operation?
2; in what format is the GTO motor sending these signals?
3; Can these be adapted? via added appropriate sender's/trigger switches....
Just brainstorming? I'm no auto electrician......
Chuck

Yo Dimi
The only thing that would be different is that you have the loom from the jdm gto which uses the w4a33 transmission, and your verada uses the f4a33 transmission.
Even with this being the case, he should still be able to wire it up somehow with a bit of problem solving. The w4a33 and the f4a33 are pretty much the same thing apart from the w4a33 being awd and the f4a33 being fwd. Just take a look at this pdf. http://p96.us/2/autotran.pdf

**** this ****.
Im not sure about the auto but you should've probably got whoever put chucks in to do it again.
They need to run some custom wiring (or use part of the sohc loom) from the auto to the TCU Then they need some custom wiring from selected pins in the DOHC ecu to the TCU to give rpm and throttle position etc... ie thats what you're hiring them for the run the custom wiring by the sounds they thought you were asking them to plug some **** in and thats it :s
I couldnt do it but someone who works in auto electrics definitely should be able to.

hey fellas i'm looking at going for a halthech E8
also had a word this morning and what's happened is that he explained that the factory triggers on the gearbox don't pair up with the GTO ECU
he said purchasing an aftermarket ecu won't solve the problem as "an aftermarket ecu needs to be run with the original ecu - and the gto ecu you have doesn't pair with your automatic gearbox"
should i take it to a different place?

do the original ecus still run the speedo/tacho/tcu etc etc. Like a piggy back but it completely takes over the fuel ignition and whatever else the given ecu features are.

This is rubbish.....
the "sensors" on the trans will be compatible.
In short, the TCU will get a speed signal from the Speedo Speed generator on the back of the speedo, The ECU will send it a signal to state the engine rev and load, the TPS will tell it the TP etc etc.
In an old trans the load and the speed determined the gear by changing the direction of the fluid in the valve body with a governer.
In these trans, these are done electronically.
If he has even part of a brain, get him to get the diag from both, use your TCU to YOUR trans, the only thing he has to over come is the pulse from the ECU confusing the TCU, this can be done easily I am sure with a kit what will turn change the pulse.
At very worst, drive in limp mode to auto salon, you will be stuck in 3rd with reverse still usable. This will not stop the engine from starting.
From memory all trans signals are inputs not outputs.
If you go aftermarket this will not solve as you will still need manual, what about if it gets that bad, get a trans from an importer from a FWD GTO?
Chuck

The fwd gtos use the same tranmissions as our cars. So he wont need to import anything.

Yeah i dont know how the DOHC tacho reads the signal. Prolly off the crank angle sensor or such. Cbf'd hooking up one of the e6x outlets to it. Thatd be a pain anyway. Would like my tacho to work if you want to look into it.

that was up a very slight hill till the about 90-100 so it felt slow. Yeah you feel it pull pretty well. Nice and torquey just keeps surging although i never do it 60 to 180 in 3rd is the best.
Nothing too extreme but just good. Itll be interesting to see how it goes after i get interior and system out of the way and make it go a bit harder.

Aye monga it's been a while! Thanks bro appreciate it :)
Had to order a new ECU is from united states as every wrecker i called in Aus couldn't help.
I paid express priority mail $70US from USPS and ECU is $175US so around $300AU all together.
Old ECU is what was causing the problems. Sparkie removed the housing of the ECU and there appeared to be a stain on the circuit board.
But all is put back now including radiator hose and brake booster etc.
After i recieve the ECU we'll just need to plug that in, put the glove box back in and it'll be okay to go.
Pitty couldn't have the car over the holiday season but it's all good. Will be worth the wait.
Engine sounds wicked. The tone is so much different to the SOHC! When the engine is idling and i'm looking at the car, the sound just doesn't match up. It's as if the sound is coming from a GTO parked behind it and my car is blocking the view.
Heaps excited though.
Just hope there won't be anymore hiccups.
Thanks for your interest guys! :D

Sparkie removed the housing of the ECU and there appeared to be a stain on the circuit board.Sounds like the capacitors leaking electrolytic. Wonder if it's actually damaged the board, or whether replacing the caps can resuscitate it... Apparently it's a reasonably common problem with ECUs the age of ours, if possible best to replace the caps before the damage is done (not that I've replaced mine, but it was checked out a while ago...).
dimi108
23-12-2007, 01:03 PM
Hey rogue thanks for that info. Gives me more of un understanding now.

Dude is this thing running yet or what?
I'm hoping to take mine in to get "started" in about a months time and yeah i dont wanna be waiting this long!
dimi108
04-01-2008, 09:21 PM
hahaha trust me you'll be waiting a bit unless you find yourself someone who know's their engine conversions, works fast, knows their wiring and is up for the job
the main reason why this conversion kept being stalled was the stuff around by the bad choice of mechanics i dealt with and the few parts i needed to order in like the igniter, harmonic balancer, wiring harness, hydraulic tensioner, ecu etc.
after keeping the car in his workshop for a week the first mechanic reckons couldn't fit the job into his schedule so it got taken to midas and after the engine was dropped in it was towed to a well known (yeah right) performance workshop here in sydney to do the wiring and transmission. they were the ones who told me that i needed a manual box and a aftermarket ecu or else it would simply not work
then i took it to kb's sparkie and he did a fantastic job on it - sorted out all the electrical. now it's back to midas and they are trying (they reckon) to get it up and running within the next few days.
i'll be checking up on it tomorrow morning at 7:00am and i'm going to get them to list to me what is left to be done and how long it will take so i can get a definite completion time instead of this "oh it'll be ready tomorrow, thursday, friday, next week, next month" business.
they had told me i would have the car up and running today 100%... but when i asked them about it they said "oh we didn't realise there is a lot more to do" pfft.. yeah right all they need to do is the radiator hose, then put back the master cylinder, brake booster and bleed the brakes. i told them don't worry about the center console and dash i will put that in just get the car running...
so yeah! be careful with who you deal with and allow at least a 2 weeks to a month for the conversion to be done (if you've got every single part needed, ready.)
but hey... i guess it'll be worth it :)
[TUFFTR]
04-01-2008, 09:26 PM
Man best of luck!
I'm hoping that cutting out the need for the ignitor and shiz and just running the fully independent ECU will minimise down time now and later.
Sounds like normal things have happened which will happen to anyone doing this kind of conversion, im hoping i'll have minimal down time by doing it right the first time.
For me all thats left is getting it dropped in, wired in, and tuned.
When you say "Trying" to get it up and running, what is the problem they are having with it now?
dimi108
04-01-2008, 09:38 PM
na no problem, just lack of interest in working on it i gathered
i called them 3 times today and pesterred them
first call i said any updates on the car? they said na there's still a lot to do and i was like what happened to the 100% it'll be ready? and he goes oh we didn't realise how much there was to be done which is bs then the big question came in and i said so is anyone actually working on it? and he goes na not at the moment but will be later this afternoon
and i said get it running by tomorrow (saturday) because i need to use the car to commute as there is no public transport at where my work is
they need to feel the pressure and get their asses moving
for those wondering so far the conversion has set me back just under $7000
and i'm using a stock 1997 3000GT (federal) ecu
an aftermarket one would've bumped up the cost a further $1500 or so...
some of you guys might think it's way too much money to be spending on the conversion but i think it'll be awesome in the end :)
it'll help a lot more if you know your stuff and if you can do some of the work yourself instead of having to rely on mechanics and workshops etc.
price list so far
front cut - $1500
wiring harness - $250
ecu - $380
engine and transmission wiring - $800
droping the engine in including all belts radiator, tune and labour - $2400
harmonic balancer - $110
hydraulic tensioner - $330
spark plugs - $120
drive shaft - $300
igniter - $100
premium motul oil - $100
extractors $900

Sweet holy jesus $7K
So far Dimi for me
Engine $1100
Freight for engine $380
New timing belt, tensioners, and water pump, like $200
Adj. Cam gears - $500
ECU $1100
Clutch - $300
Iridiums + 10mm leads - $150
So now imma just trying to get it dropped in DIY to save some $$$
then the rest goes on getting it hooked up.
GL dude.
I have found a 3LTT Font cut but they want $3K, i think especially in VIC where this kinda conversion is rare you'd be easily looking at over $7K

Hey dimi you forgot the exhaust fitup and modify..... Thats no bolt up jobbie HAHA
Hey tuffy.... you got somone to fit new extractors? Or you using original manifols and joining them up? You will have clearance issues with the rear cast manifold. A lug needs to be cut off to clear the rear engine mount and there was about 15mm from flange to rear crossmember.
Had alot of stufing around to clear the cross/m and join the 2 banks together.
Like i said to dimi there may be a knock when the motor torques backwards under load.

i was hoping not much.

05-01-2008, 08:17 AM
thanks paula hehe
yeah do the drop in yourself and you'll save at least a grand
oh yeah plus the extractors from dan
nearly forgot about that haha
checked up on it today
everything is hooked up now including the brakes etc. just needs the alternator bolt, need to fit the smaller belt for the alternator (i'll be running without the a/c compressor for now) and need to fasten the overfill tank but the engine bay is pretty cramped at the moment so hopefully they can manage to squeeze it in somewhere and that's about it.
started the car again, let it idle and gave it a few revs - it sounded awesome
it's got such a unique (and weird) engine note
very different to my supra and different to the rb but has this very distinguishable sound especially with that deep burble
workshop manager said it's 90% done just the small bits and pieces to make sure nothing goes wrong and i should be able to take it home by mid next week
the main issue at the moment is hoping that the smaller belt will work out without having to fit the a/c compressor as i don't have one.

hey bloke, was just skimming through and saw a simple run down of costs.
what i was wondering is if you brought the front cut, how come the wiring wasnt included, for things like the gearbox? and such as mentioned you paid like 300 bucks extra? am i just interpretting it wrong?
I know how expensive these things can be, my brother had his galant converted to a 4g63T and that was around the 8thousand mark, but was like it came that way from the factory, aircon, oil coolers so on and so forth.
Interested to know asi have the money for the half cut plus 3 grand but i know i am able to do a lot of the fabrication myself and ive changed many a motor and gearbox, and looms. The hardest part about the conversion is finding another way for the missus to get around while the Rada is of the road, i hope anyways
Good luck champ
Lionel
dimi108
06-01-2008, 12:09 AM
hey lionel, this is my reply with a few tips - take a good 5 mins to have a read of it i hope it helps...
first off, before putting the car into the workshop i knew this would take a while to complete so i bought myself a cheap run around car for $600 with 3 months rego... not the flashiest of cars but it sure does the job.
it makes life easier commuting to and from the workshop, picking up parts from wreckers, transporting things etc.
something you should consider before getting started on your car.
the wiring harness and igniter wasn't included in my front cut as this had been removed by the wrecker and sold seperately to somebody else.
a good lesson from this is to know what should be in the front cut and not get too excited by just seeing the engine sitting on the shelf - always check that everything is in tact with your front cut.
you need to make sure the pulleys are in good shape - not chipped or cracked, the wiring is all there, igniter, loom, a/c compressor, coil pack etc.
wreckers and parts recyclers will always pick parts out of their half cuts and front cuts if people call and request parts. so you'll need to make sure that everything is there and if anything is missing research and make sure you can source those parts in without too much time, hassle or cost.
the funny thing is, the whole wiring harness i purchased from another wrecker was not even needed in the end as the new sparkie spliced the old loom and joined them up. so now i'm left with a complete gto harness including the fuse boxes sitting in one big pile at the workshop not needing to be used which was a waste of $300
remember this - if your mechanic or sparkie freaks out and tells you that you'll need the complete harness from the gto - you won't.
as for your budget, let's just say you've got $4500 (including $1500 for the front cut and $800 for the wiring to be done)
if you know your stuff and you are able to do the transplant yourself including the extractors then it'll be even cheaper.
fabricating the extractors yourself will knock a good $1000 off the total bill
now the most time consuming part of the conversion wasn't the labour or the wiring or even ordering parts - it was finding a sparkie and a workshop that actually wanted to do the job!
i was stuffed around by 2 places that kept the car for 3 weeks all together just sitting in their workshop.
2 weeks later when it was time to get "started" on the car they bailed out as they realised it would be too time consuming for them and not worth the trouble.
so finding someone who is dead set willing to get stuck into it immediately is paramount.
-lynel-
06-01-2008, 10:07 AM
yeah thanks for the heads up, thats one thing i never considered, but now you mentin it ive had the problem before, that a lot of workshops are that snowed under its easy for them to push harder jobs to the back of the pack
Ive done a few engine swaps, myself (of the same type) and helped out my retired mechanic mate do a few conversion (mostly v8's into commy's) i honestly do think my only drama will be wiring it in.
Ill take your advice and buy a reliable runabout before hand, hope you get your ride back as soon as you can

thanks guys i'm greatful for the support and help from everyone here and at the mitsubishi club
can't wait to take it for it's first drive
hopefully the transmission will last me a few more months until i drop the manual box in
the sound still amazes me
there's something that makes the hairs on your neck stand up when the engine growls
btw mal i'll be picking up those wiring diagrams on friday afternoon from jim (the sparkie)
so i'll get a copy out to you on monday at lunch time
i strongly recommend anyone in sydney who needs wiring to be done to take their car to sideshow's performance wiring in giraween (http://spw.starkie.net/) which is where kb got his wiring done too a few years ago
p.s i hope this has inspired you guys to do the dohc conversion too

i'm so g'd up to take the car for a drive
i was supposed to have the car on tuesday but the workshops' supplier brought in the wrong sized belts
today they got around 15 different sized belts for me to try on tomorrow
i'm praying that one will be the right size and if it is i'll get a call from them saying she's all good to go
if i get her tomorrow i'll be the happiest dude
and i'll send you an mms of her in action
all this wait has really drained me
especially with the workshop telling me it'll be ready by today then need another part over and over... argh
and i know they're getting annoyed with my calls for updates but it's not my fault - i need to know what's going on and when i don't hear anything from them i start thinking of worst case scenarios

or wrap some string around it then go into repco and go "whats the closest belt above say 112cm in a 6 ribbed or whatever pattern you've got" go back to car fit and adjust tensioners then drive. ****ing took me like 10mins

i don't know why but i'm even more excited than the first day i picked up the supra
the car will need to go back to the workshop for a tune next saturday so it will run at top performance but for now i'm just happy it's driveable and has that beautiful 24v gto sound and performance
i must be the happiest guy in the world right now

haha thanks guys
lmao paula most def will come down but i'd like to get it tuned first
i just picked it up and took an early lunch
sounds awesome but feels somewhat restrictive
definitely more power than the 12V and such a beefier engine note even at low rpm's
i guess it being an auto is one of the major restrictions as well as the stock air box and resonator which are still on. it needs a good tune. i've got new spark plugs for it.
dan i'm gonna drop off the car to you next week for the extractors and the exhaust to be done
if you could please do a nice catback system for me with that new muffler that we looked at that would be good
oh and the extractors too hehe
i'm just driving her normal now trying hard not to plant my foot down so nothing goes BANG until i get the tune done
the workshop said it's only running about 60-70% of what it should be and i believe them
so back to them next saturday for the tune
already on the way back to work i gave it a hit up victoria road across the gladesville bridge to see how it went and a group of kids standing on the bridge all turned around and one said GO THE GALANT i was like argh lol
