26.10.21 Pitch for smart contract managed community-owned event space

Warehouse

Interested in renting cheap warehouse space to put on parties? Read further or contact me :)

WHAT

I'm looking for other party organisers interested in pooling funds together to rent licensed event space direct.

I'm envisioning something expansive but extremely minimalist that can be dressed up to the party organiser's desire (like a warehouse!).

While the main objective is cheap event space hire, ownership of the event space also provides other benefits such as: control of aesthetics, event promotion with no risk of shutdown, access to event insurance etc.

HOW FUNDS WILL BE POOLED

Party organisers "buy nights" by contributing funds equivalent to ( [total cost of the lease] / [number of nights in the lease] ) * [number of nights they'd like to hold events on] + [service fee for cleaning & utilities].

Funds are contributed upfront to minimize risk to the overall enterprise and in practice different nights will cost different amounts depending on demand (season, proximity to weekend, distance into the future).

Example cost breakdown with real property (extremely simplified):

Property: 111 King St Newtown, currently listed on https://www.realcommercial.com.au/for-lease/property-111-king-street-newtown-nsw-2042-502913714 for $3000p/w. Licensed with dancefloor size of 120sqm, bathrooms, kitchen, outdoor carpark.

Breakdown:

Friday and Saturday nights at $1000/night

Sunday-Thursday nights at $200/night.

These figures are only an example - there are definitely better and more complex ways to divide costs. Property could run as a busy King St cafe by day! Also, doubtless there are more aesthetic properties - just not too many to draw from at the current time :)

HOW FUNDS (AND THE EVENT SPACE) WILL BE MANAGED

As the proposed setup requires a large number of individuals each contributing funds that are small in absolute terms but likely substantial to the individual, this creates a unique challenge:

The large number of individuals means disagreement over use of funds is likely, but dispute resolution via traditional means (going to court) will cost more than any amount contributed.

To meet this challenge, funds will be managed via a blockchain based smart contract rather than a traditional contract. Compared to a traditional contract, a smart contract provides extremely strong and cheap dispute resolution and allows funds to be held in a shared bank account and managed by voting.

With this system, there will be no single individual or committee who has more influence over the event space than anyone else. In short, once the smart contract is entered into, you will be guaranteed to "get what you pay for" without needing to trust myself or any other members. If necessary, we can organise a professional audit of the smart contract to ensure the above!

If anyone wants to know more about how the smart contract works or why blockchain I'd love to explain things further by chat or by call. My contact details are below.

WHERE TO FROM HERE

Beyond the concept of an event space managed by a smart contract, everything else is to be decided. If you are interested in participating, please reach out - there are countless questions to answer (e.g. how to price different nights). The scale of this project is also undecided - smart contracts can manage $100k to $10m with equal ease!

Just want to know if/when the project gets off the ground? Reach out and I can note your name.

SHARE

Please share this with friends. Organisations built on smart contracts are inherently collaborative and benefit from many people with small contributions.

This project does not benefit me monetarily and I'm motivated only by the opportunity to spearhead something the Sydney rave scene desperately needs: cheap, minimalist event space. It's also a great portfolio project ;)
